Frequently asked questions

How does the city safety comparison tool work?
Pick a state, type a city name to search, then check up to four cities and select "Compare Selected". The side-by-side table shows each city's safety score, letter grade, violent crime rate, and property crime rate per 100,000 residents, all derived from the same FBI Uniform Crime Reporting data.
Where does the crime data come from?
Every figure traces to the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, which compiles offense counts from roughly 19,500 law enforcement agencies nationwide. Rates are normalized per 100,000 residents so a small town and a large city can be compared fairly. See our methodology for the full calculation.
Why can I only compare four cities at once?
A four-column table stays readable on a phone screen and keeps each metric easy to scan. To weigh more places, run the comparison twice or browse the state and ranking pages, which list dozens of cities ordered by safety.
