How ZIP Code Crime Data Is Compiled

The FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program does not report crime by ZIP code, offenses are reported by individual law-enforcement agencies, which map to counties, not postal codes. Each ZIP page on PlainCrime combines the ZIP's own U.S. Census figures (population, land area) with the FBI UCR crime rate of the county that ZIP is located in, using the Census Bureau's official 2020 ZCTA-to-county relationship file to make that attribution.

A small number of ZIP codes in states with limited or abolished county government aren't yet covered. Read our full data methodology for the complete pipeline and limitations.
