County-level crime counts are drawn from FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, Crime in the United States, Table 10 (Offenses Known to Law Enforcement by County). Per-capita rates use the formula (offenses ÷ population) × 100,000, with population figures from the FBI's reporting tables.
UCR participation is voluntary, so not every county submits complete data every year, and Table 10 does not include population figures for every county. Read our full data methodology for the complete pipeline, scoring formula, and limitations.
