How we built this ranking

Rates use (violent offenses ÷ reporting-year population) × 100,000 on FBI Table 8 municipal rows. Only consecutive years enter the comparison, both years must clear the same completeness screen used on city profiles, and the prior rate must be at least 50 per 100,000. The sort key is absolute points per 100,000; percent is secondary context.
