Directory Methodology
Every state listed here has its own crime-rate page drawing on FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program submissions. The state pages link downward into city and county detail pages, cities from FBI Crime in the United States, Table 8, counties from Table 10. Population denominators come from the FBI reporting tables with U.S. Census Bureau estimates as a fallback where FBI populations are missing.
Rankings, safety grades, and trend indexes derive from the same underlying dataset, they are different cuts of the FBI UCR Part I offense counts. Rankings apply a 10,000 population floor to reduce small-sample noise; safety grades use a composite index against current national averages.
UCR participation is voluntary. Some states and counties have gaps in reporting. Read the full methodology or the data limitations guide for a complete picture of what the directory does and does not cover.
